Umberto Leone, nato nel 1961 a Castelvetrano (TP), e Ute Pyka, nata a Francoforte (Germania) nel 1957, vivono e lavorano assieme a Selinunte, in provincia di Trapani. Le opere di Pyka-Leone sono presenti nelle collezioni di importanti musei e fondazioni come la Fondazione Orestiadi di Gibellina, la Fondazione Antonio Presti-Fiumara d'Arte di Castel di Tusa, al Palazzo Reale di Giordania e nella sede di Telekom-Arabia a Riyadh. Sono stati premiati dalla rivista I.D. Magazine (New-York) e dalla Fondazione Buttitta (Palermo).

Il loro sodalizio artistico è fondato su una ricerca che si sviluppa attorno al rapporto uomo-natura. Una natura intesa come energia e processo che crea e plasma e di cui l'uomo é parte. Una stratificazione di cose e fenomeni che contribuiscono a crescere e modellare la materia in una visione in cui forma e spirito si fondono a cantare il linguaggio della natura. Secondo tale intensione poetica gli oggetti della loro indagine artistica divengono l'albero, simbolo della vita vegetale e di unione dinamica tra cielo e terra, e l’uomo. Cominciano così a nascere le prime sculture 'Eliotropiche': la sega scandaglia le venature del legno per riaprire varchi attraverso I quali ritorna a filtrare la luce, luce che ha dato vita all'albero prima di indursi in legno.

Questa particolare tecnica di lavorazione viene impiegata dagli artisti anche per la  creazione di mobili-scultura che, al Salone Internazionale del Mobile di Milano, ottengono numerosi riconoscimenti dalla critica e dal mercato anche oltre i confini nazionali. Ute Pyka e Umberto Leone, divenuti una sola anima creatrice in questa loro intima ricerca, utilizzano spesso il legno d’ulivo, elemento- simbolo di una mediterraneità ricercata, che diviene fondamento di un pensiero costante: raccontare le pulsioni arcaiche ed ancora arcane che legano l'uomo al linguaggio della natura.

Umberto Leone was born in Castelvetrano, in 1961, and Ute Pyka in Frankfort on  the 24 of October 1957.   They now live and work together in Castelvetrano in the provice of Trapani, Italy.

The works of of Pyka-Leone are represented in many important collections and museums such as the Orestiade Foundation of Gibellina, the Antonio Presti-Fiumara d’Arte Foundation in Castel di Tusa, at the the Royal Palace of Giordan and in the office centre of Telecom-Arabia in Riyadh.

They were prize winners in the ID Magazine, New York in July/August1998 and, most recently, at the Buttita Foundation of Palermo.
Their work is based and developed upon their researches into the rapport between humanity and nature.   Nature, comes from the processes and energy of creation, and of this humanity is a part.   A stratification of things and events, forming solid material into a vison in which form and spirit create the very foundation of the song of nature.   Because of these poetic intentions, the objects of Ute and Umberto's enquiries become a symbol of vegetable life and the dynamic union of Sky Earth and Humanity.   It was this process that created their first sculptures “Eliotropica”.   The bandsaw  follows the markings of natural wood, discovering and re-opening holes and spaces through which light can once again return and infiltrate as once it did as the tree grew in life.
This particular technique of working is used by the two artists for the making of furniture, objects and sculpture.   At the Milan International Furniture Fair they obtained many good notices from the critics and admiration from buyers arround the world.
Ute Pyka and Umberto Leone, have become one in their researches, work and constant thoughts.   They often use olive wood, the very symbol of the Mediterranean spirit and history that tells of the ancient pulse and mysteries binding man and nature.
